FAQs

Which clay is used, and what makes this murti eco friendly?

It is shaped by hand from shadu mati, the soft riverbed clay traditionally used by murtikars across Maharashtra and Gujarat, and finished with water soluble, non toxic colours. There is no Plaster of Paris, no chemical paint, no glitter and no synthetic adhesive on it.
Shadu mati holds fine detail beautifully and breaks down completely in plain water, which is what lets you complete visarjan at home. Because it is natural clay, small variations in shade and surface texture are normal, and each murti carries the marks of the hands that shaped it.

I am celebrating away from home for the first time. Is this enough?

Yes. A student in a hostel, someone posted to a new city, a couple in a rented flat, a family without an elder nearby to guide them. A murti this size, a clean cloth on a table, a diya and durva is a complete sthapana. Ganpati is invited by shraddha, not by scale, and a puja done sincerely in one room is as whole as one done in a hall.
If there are children at home, this is a good size to let them take part. Let them wash and arrange the durva, string the flowers, place the modak on the plate, hold the aarti thali with you, and ring the ghanti. Children remember the festival through what they were allowed to do in it, and a murti at this height is one they can see properly and stand beside.

How do I do the sthapana, and do I need a priest?

You do not need a priest. Any member of the household, women included, may perform the sthapana and the daily puja. What the shastra asks for is cleanliness and shraddha.
Clean the space and place a chowki or a small table in the northeast, covered with a fresh red or yellow cloth. Spread a few akshat, place the murti with both hands, and set a kalash or a small lota of water beside it. Light the diya and agarbatti. Take your sankalp, saying aloud how many days Ganpati will stay.
Offer haldi, kumkum, akshat, chandan, durva of twenty-one blades, red flowers, and modak as naivedya, then close with the aarti and a prarthana for kshama. Sthapana is traditionally done during madhyahna kaal, the midday window on Ganesh Chaturthi, though doing it later the same day with full shraddha is entirely acceptable if work makes the midday window impossible.

What is the daily routine, and how many days should I keep Ganpati?

Each morning, wipe the murti gently with a soft dry cloth. Never wash a clay murti with water. Clear yesterday's flowers, offer fresh durva and flowers, light the diya, offer naivedya, and do the aarti. Morning aarti is usually done between about seven and nine, and the evening aarti around dusk, between roughly six and eight.
If you are doing this alone alongside a full working day, ten minutes in the morning and ten in the evening is enough. Consistency across the days of your sankalp matters more than elaborateness on any one day.
For a first sthapana, or where you are managing it on your own, dedh din or three days is a gentle way to begin. You can extend in the years that follow. Whichever you choose, take that sankalp at the start and complete it.

Can I do visarjan at home, and how long does it take?

Yes, An 8 inch murti needs a large bucket, a wide tub, or a bathing drum holding roughly 30 to 40 litres of fresh water, so the murti is fully submerged with room to settle. Perform the aarti and the uttar puja, ask Ganpati for kshama for any lapses in seva, and lower the murti gently with both hands. Offer durva, flowers, and a spoon of naivedya into the water as you would at a ghat.
The clay begins softening within the first hour and usually settles over four to eight hours leaving it overnight is easiest. Afterwards, pour the water and soft mitti into a tulsi plant, a garden bed, or large pots on your balcony. Please avoid pouring it into a drain or a kitchen sink.

Where should the murti be placed, and facing which direction?

Place Ganpati facing north or east, which usually means setting up along the north-east corner - the ishaan kon - of your living room or pooja room. A 1 feet murti on a chowki needs roughly two to two and a half feet of clear width, so plan the corner before the murti arrives.
Keep it raised on a firm, level surface rather than on the floor or a folding table, leave open space in front for the family to sit for aarti, and avoid placing the setup under a staircase or against a wall shared with a bathroom.

How should I decorate around a 7 inch murti?

Keep it small and natural. A cloth covered chowki, a simple backdrop of cotton or silk, a short marigold and mogra string, a few banana leaves at the sides, and diyas rather than plastic lighting. A makhar of about a foot wide is plenty at this size, and a larger one will leave the murti looking lost.
Durva, red hibiscus and modak on a banana leaf complete the offering. Fresh flowers and leaves can go straight into your plant soil afterwards, which keeps the whole setup consistent with the murti itself. If children are helping, paper craft toran and hand drawn rangoli work beautifully and clear away without waste.

What is the minimum samagri I actually need?

At minimum, a clean cloth for the chowki, a ghee diya, agarbatti, durva, red flowers, haldi, kumkum, akshat, chandan, a lota of water, and something sweet for naivedya. That is a complete puja.
The fuller list adds camphor, dhoop, a kalash with a coconut and mango leaves, supari, panchamrit, and modak or laddoo for each day. If you would rather not gather it piece by piece, particularly in a new city where you are still finding the shops, our Ganesh Chaturthi puja samagri kit has it measured out for a home puja.

What if the murti chips or breaks?

Please do not worry. A chip or a crack in a clay murti is not an ashubh sign. Clay is soft by nature and small damage while decorating or moving the idol is common. Continue your puja as usual and complete the visarjan on the day of your sankalp.
If the murti breaks in a way that makes puja difficult, gather every piece with respect and immerse them together in water, or place them in clean soil. Never put the pieces into household waste.
